Peripheral Arterial Disease

Peripheral arterial disease, or PAD, is a condition that affects 1 in 20 Americans over the age of 50. It's as serious and as dangerous a disease as coronary artery disease, but is often underreported by patients because they mistake its symptoms for "normal signs of aging."

PAD is caused by atherosclerosis, which occurs as fatty deposits called plaque build up in the blood vessels and adhere to the arterial walls. The plaque narrows the arteries and reduces the flow of blood through them. The resulting impaired blood flow can lead to symptoms such as intermittent claudication (cramping leg pain, numbness, or heaviness in your leg muscles, especially when walking or exercising), skin discoloration on the legs and feet, poor nail growth, burning pain in the toes, feet, and legs, and open sores or wounds on the feet that heal slowly or refuse to heal at all.

Peripheral arterial disease can cause difficulty walking and contribute to a sedentary lifestyle, which increases your risk of stroke, heart attack, and other cardiovascular problems. If left untreated, the wounds on the feet characteristic of the disease can become infected and lead to gangrene and limb loss.

If you have experienced any of the above symptoms, you should be evaluated by vascular surgeons such as the experts at NHVS. We can determine whether you have peripheral arterial disease in just a few minutes, using painless, non-invasive test procedures. If you have PAD, we can treat it using the most advanced, state-of-the-art methodologies available.
